Something new is in store for our youth and young adults.
As Pope Francis said in Laudato Si‘, “The Spirit of God has filled the universe with possibilities and therefore from the very heart of things something new can always emerge.” The National Franciscan Youth and Young Adult Commission believes the “something new” is that of fostering communion with our youth (OFS Rule, Art. 24). It is not a new call, as our Secular Franciscan history began with our Lord saying to St. Francis, “Rebuild my church.” The Commission’s intent is to motivate and support individuals, fraternities, and regions in their efforts to inspire our younger generations to live Gospel lives.
The theme of World Youth Day 2019 to be held in Panama is “I am the servant of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” (Luke 1:38) Referencing the Annunciation, Pope Francis has told our young people, “When the Lord calls us, he doesn’t stop at what we are or what we have done. On the contrary, at the very moment that he calls us, he is looking ahead to everything we can do, all the love we are capable of giving.”
As Secular Franciscans, we should take these words to heart also. No, it is not a new call. But the Youth and Young Adult Commission is here to help you step into the world of our youth and young adults with renewed enthusiasm, courage, confidence, and joy. We can, young and old(er), walk together in our journey toward holiness.
